My cellmate calls me a martyr. I review the larder’s contents, empty save small potatoes. I despise scrimshanking despite my obvious negligible position. I look over my shoulder at the much malign reflection staring back at me.

Restlessness in my lack of operation still leaves me panting. My thoughts mail letters of torporific passages. For want of motivation my home turned prison.

The Lasso Saloon rumbles with a cacophony of voices and string music. My ears perk up at the jingle of spurs. I try to guess the identity. Is it outlaw, lawman or random gunslinger?

I pour another shot of cactus wine. I hang the glass up to drip dry. My right hand feels for my holster. I feign ignorance to the sound.

The slam of my vittles on the table makes me jump. The curlish wench storms away.

The old west fades to tourist trap. I sigh and pull good toward me.

“Wastrel?!” I stand breathless as my fists cease to clutch. “You, my dear are tighter than an octopus squeezing every pennyworth rather than chase fresh meat.”

“I’ll raise a pint to that metal you received from the wanderjahr spent marooned in your hometown.” She smiles in that way the ceases hope.

Reality reverts is possessive grip upon me. My trance state objurgates me for allowing it’s dissolution. My pulse quickening as anxiety enhances the importance of my next move.

A semicircle of demons speak in quiet words. Abrasion is their language. They know my mind lives through absorption and they know it.

“You are in my hand!!” I shiver “Stop calling it Alice and Wonderland syndrome! You aren’t big enough to hurt me. I’m bigger than this room.”

Photo Challenge #213 – Stuck in the Mud

Nicolas-Bruno

– Nicolas Bruno

Desmond began to feel that sinking feeling. Audrey seemed more distance, like she had turned her back on their future. Their conversations seemed to have an unseen hand waiting to cut in at any time.

“Are you listening? There’s a reason it feels like I’m a big fish in a little pond.” Audrey’s words plunge into silence.

“Dear, there will always be times we feel out of place.” Desmond reels himself into conversation. “Too many times the troubles get all the attention. It would be a good time for us to get away.”

“You know I always felt being on a beach would be where I would bloom. But I always seem to be going off the deep end.” Audrey pauses waiting for a reaction. She stares at her phone awaiting the next line.

“Nique. Isn’t it?!” my hipster stepdaughter impulsively attacks the clothing rack and English language through elision.

My eyes see print of creative colored flowers on black. To me Namelessness and impoverished payer, chooses between murmurous and stealth replies. Liking something means it’s too old & not liking it too quickly means it’s prefect. Logic has hitchhiked away from these excursions.

“It’s not my color.” I respond with the sense of letdown that she might consider it. I try to decrypt the look on her fresh face. “Your mom won’t approve of the neckline, of course.”

She stands akimbo in response. “Notin’ but help!”
I smile and look at my phone to check the time. I mutter “Five minutes already?”
