OK It’s a Downy woodpecker. But she has a sweet tooth.

She probably learned it from the chickadees.

I never seen chickadees do that. We have an oriole that will do this in spring. But not in summer. I’ll have to see who else is after the sugar water

I cover the stations on my hummingbird feeders with red netting and rubber bands every summer to prevent it. Birds who do not normally eat sugar water in their habitat can have their internal system screwed up by it. Like humans, they’re designed for more wholesome food and OCCASIONAL sweet treats. Also, the wasps and hornets are deterred by the netting handily.

I will have to try that then. If it makes them sick that isn’t good.

Yeah, it’s always endearing when wildlife takes the junk food from our hand but most people aren’t thinking about the wildlife, they’re just entertaining themselves. It’s far more exciting to experience rare, enchanted moments of close animal encounters in the wild than to dupe them to our doorstep.

She liked it a lot. She was there for ten minutes

How funny!! She wasn’t there for the water – she was there for the nectar!

That’s what so strange. Of course, maybe she think she’s a hummingbird.

Maybe she was wanting a drink of water but tasted the nectar and liked it! That’s really funny.
